1. Early References 1.1 Victoria County History of Bedfordshire - Part 27 - Stodden Hundred The Stodden Hundred comprises the parishes of: Bolnhurst, Clapham, Dean, Keysoe, Knotting, Melchbourne, Milton Ernest, Oakley, Pertenhall, Riseley, Shelton, Little Staughton, Swineshead, Tilbrook and Yeldon. Manor of Milton Ernest (Page 144 & 145) ".... On the death of Walter Erneys (living 1550) the manor was divided among his daughters. One of these had married Christopher Turnor and another William STRANGE (Ref (Chan. Proc. (Ser. 2), bdle. 154, no. 19.); a third was probably Sybil Keale, who is found quitclaiming a third of the manor to Edmund Turnor, son of Christopher before named, in 1575, thus uniting two-thirds of the manor in the Turnor family. This double share is hereafter always spoken of as the manor of MILTON ERNEST. The STRANGEs' third following a different descent is treated later. ....."The third share of the manor inherited by Margaret wife of William STRANGE followed a different descent. william STRANGE, after the death of his wife, became tenent for life of the said property, but ignoring the limited powers of a life tenent he sold it in 1562 to Thomas Rolt (Ref Chan. Proc. (Ser. 2), bdle. 154, no. 19) The rightful heirs of Margaret, on arriving at full age, refused to confirm the sale, and Thomas Rolt is found petitioning for redress of his grievances (Ref Ibid). In 1571, however, Walter STRANGE, presumably the rightful heir, quitclaimed the manor to him (Ref Feet of Fines. Beds.Mich. 12 Eliz)." Oakley (Page 150) The history of the manor becomes obscure about 1451 due to the lack of documentary evidence. It appears, soon after the death of John Reynes, to have been split into two moieties. Elizabeth Anstey, granddaughter of Cecilia sister of John Reynes married William Taylard; their grandson Sir Laurence Taylard was seised of one moiety before 1548. Robert Lestraunge died seised of the other moiety in 1512 (Chan Inq pm ser 2 xxviii, 19), his son and heir Thomas levied fines of it in 1530 and 1535 (Chan Inq Mich. 25, Henry viii). From the latter it would appear to have passed to William Mardaunt (he was described as of Oakley in the visitation of 1566; that he was related to the Lestraunge family is proved by the Lestraunge eagle displayed argent being quartered in the Mardaunt arms. Keysoe (Page 137) In 1302 Walter de Stouton held a thirteenth part of a fee in Keysoe of that part of the barony of Bedford then held by Robert Lestraunge. (Feued Aids, i, 10). 1.2 History of Bedfordshire - 1066 to 1888 by Joyce Godber Leighton Buzzard The only reference to the name is under Section 15, Towns, Leighton Buzzard: "After matters relating to law and order comes the "small court" dealing with tenancies. Thus in March 1464 William STRAUNGE and his wife surrendered a house, a close, 34 acres of arable land and 3 roods of meadow; and these were taken over by John MORELL the younger, very convenient for him, for the house was next to that of his father." 1.3 Roger Le STRANGE A snippet about Roger Le STRANGE - he married Maud de Beauchamp about 1240 - she was born 1220 at Bedford and died about April 1273. Her father was Lord William Iva de Beauchamp and mother Ida (or Idonea) de Longspee. Maud had another husband Roger de Mowbray. 1.4 Newspaper Entries Leighton Buzzard items Newspaper Date: 10 March 1863, Newspaper Page: 4, Volume: 3, Number: 115, Column: 6 Births, Local Subject: STRANGE, Wellington Street, Luton, Bedfordshire, England Summary: The wife of Mr. STRANGE, draper of Wellington street, Luton, Beds. gave birth to a son on 3rd of March 1863. Parishes In Bedfordshire we are very fortunate that all of the anglican registers, up to 1812, have been transcribed and are available in printed form. This was started in the 1930's by a Mr. F.G. EMMISON but finished in the recent years by the Bedfordshire Family History Society. The following are my extractions of all STRANGE and variants. There are missing years recorded in the indexes where both Registers and Bishop's Transcripts were not located or known to have been destroyed, I leave it the individual researcher to look these up as they are quite detailed. I'm now concentrating my genealogy efforts on my grandmother's line. I am seeking more details about Job STRANGE, born 1838/40 in Bedford - See Bedfont on the Middlesex page - the census records are incorrect in saying Bedford. |
