1 Families Dorset Family of John James STRANGE Mr John James STRANGE of Horndean, Hampshire exchanged correspondence with Barbara Lawrence in 1992/4 about his family: His family came from Chichester/Bosham, Sussex, arriving there in the 1890's from Sturminster/Newton, Dorset. He wrote that he had mainly STRANGE's from about 1720 to 1880. His great grandfather (Theophilus James STRANGE), born 1829 in Hazlebury Bryan, DOR, had a brother Christopher John born 1825; he was a farmer of about 600 acres in the 1880's - 1890's and lived in Spetsbury, DOR. He continues that his GGF's mother in law's maiden name was a Frances STRANGE, suspecting that they were cousins. Family of Lucy-Anne Cranmore My Strange family from Dorset were Robert Strange 1818 Okeford Fitzpaine, died 9 12 1863married to Elizabeth Gibbs b.1818 Waterson Children, Louisa Strange, b,12 May 1856 Broadmayne Charles G. Click here for an PDF file Claire said, "I am not descended from the STRANGE family but rather from the COOMBS family of Cerne Abbas, Dorset. I have done extensive research on this family and actually visited Cerne Abbas in May. Grace (COOMBS) STRANGE'S parents are my 7th Great-grandparents. I am descended through two of Grace's brothers (Robert & James) as the son of James COOMBS married the daughter of Robert COOMBS (first cousins)". Shaftsbury Arthur G Strange born c1870, see 1891 Census, Mere, Wiltshire From: "Frank Strange" (Frank(dot)Strange(at)tpi(dot)net) I have been researching my family name for some years. They were in Shaftsbury in Dorset in the late 1800's and earlier in other Dorset towns and villages in that part of Dorset. My great grandfather Frederick William Strange moved to London when working for the railways. 1 Frederick William Strange; dob: 25 Oct 1860 Shaftsbury, Dorset; dod: Mar 1901 + Rosetta Letitia Bown 18 Oct 1880 England 2 Frederick William Strange; dob: 4 Feb 1883, England; dod: 1964, England Louisa Julia Hosking 27 Jul 1915 Stoke Wake Ruth Pringle has an interest here and in Lydlinch. On 7th January 2012 Ruth said, "My ancestor John Strange (1733-1816) was born at Stoke Wake but married Susannah White in 1754 at Hazelbury Bryan and settled there. There is another family of Stranges in Hazelbury Bryan that seem to originate in Lydlinch. They interconnect with my Strange family with a marriage in the Drake family. Does anyone know if these two Strange families are blood relatives and part of the same tree?" Sturminster Newton From Robert Adams: My family come from the Sturminster Newton area of Dorset. Some Strange names keep popping up on two different sides. My GGG Grandmother was Frances Strange who married John Drake at Alfpuddle in 1805. They then seem to move and settle for the next three generation in Hazelbury Bryan, Dorset. On another side Frances (or Fanny) Goodfellow married John Strange b.1756 at Stoke Wake nr. Hazelbury Bryan. A common Goodfellow family Christian name is Theophilus which I see from your page crops up in the Strange family too. My Theo is listed wrongly as being born in Chilmark, Wilts on the Mormon site, he was actually born in Child Okeford, as was another Theo Goodfellow in 1829. Hence my GG Grandmother and her daughter-in-law my G Grandmother both had Strange relations. If you have any info on the Goodfellow or the Drake family through your Strange researches, I would really appreciate it, as I am a complete amateur at this game. 3 Oddments Vernon Herridge found this entry at Dorchester Records Office (Dorset) in a book on Quaker marriages in Dorset, parish not recorded 1722 Jul 23 James STRANGE of Belchalwell, Poole married Jane CARTER (Widow) of Tarant Monckton. Vernon Herridge found these references to STRANGE Sailors whilst looking for other things at Dorchester Records office. He took a digital photo and unfortunately missed the last few codes. Patrick Strange made the observations that Henry Strange (Captain Harry Strange) was a very famous Thames Sailing Barge master, said to be unsurpassed in his chosen profession. "Cock O' The Walk" was a large ketch rigged type of barge called a "Boomie", sadly sunk in the first war. There was also another very well known barge master called Captain Tom Strange, Captain Harry's brother. He guessed that Dick Strange, H. Strange and Jack Strange would all most certainly been relatives of Captain Harry and brother Tom. Any way if anyone is interested there is quite a lot about the brothers and their exploits in "Sailing Barges" by Frank G.G.Carr, (which is wonderful book in its own right).
