A Marine STRANGE Reference
There are marine STRANGE references to Capt Harry STRANGE. Capt Tom STRANGE and Mrs T.STRANGE, they were notable Thames barge skippers, in "Sailing Barges" by Frank G.G.Carr and "Down Tops'l" by Hervey Benham.

Capt Harry STRANGE was the skipper of the barge "Cock o' the Walk", which had carved on the counter a gilded cockerel with the words "While I live I'll crow". Apparently this very attractive vessel was unbeatable under his command, until sunk by the Germans in WW1.  Harry STRANGE had a brother Tom, who was also a barge skipper and owned the "Davenport". They were both famed for their long distance voyages (for a Sailing Barge), going as far a field as Bantry Bay, Donegal and the Shetland Islands (about 1890). Tom's wife was from Belgium, and Carr adds rather ungallantly, that she was a very large lady.

Hervey Benham adds that they were from six barging brothers, who hailed from the Ipswich family of STRANGE. In "Spritsail Barges of Thames and Medway", by Edgar J March. It states that the "Davenport" grounded on the redoubt at Eastbourne, early on the morning of February 27th 1936, when bound from Plymouth to Sheerness with a cargo of firebricks. Her crew of three and two dogs, were rescued by the motor lifeboat "Jane Holland". No mention is made of the fate of the barge, or the identity of the crew. But I wonder if either of the brothers might have been a little long in the tooth, as I get the impression that by 1890, Harry was an established and well respected skipper  If anyone is related to the above, I am sure that they will be fully aware of Harry and Tom STRANGE very interesting history. But if not, it's well worth reading the above books, as well as "Mistleyman's  Log" by Chubb Horlock.

Both Benham and Carr have a lot more anecdotes and details of their careers and adventurers.
