My maiden name was Strange. I am a member of a very large family from the Pontypool area in South Wales. I know my great grandfather's family had links with Cardiff. I am trying to put together some history for my children. My father is one of 10 Stranges and his father was one of 12. I am collecting as much information as I can about them but only have details from my immediate family; these are:
Charles and Caroline (nee Pearce) Strange who died November 1959 and January 1960.
Charles had a brother Henry from Cardiff and a sister Charlotte who lived in Pontypool.
Charles and Caroline lived in the Pontypool area; they had 12 children, one died aged 2 the others all survived to adulthood but sadly only two are still alive, these are Frances (Drinkwater) who still lives in the area and Bessie (Staplehurst) who has lived most of her adult life in London. Most remained in South Wales but others lived elsewhere in the UK, including Maud (Moran) who lived in Doncaster and Iris who lived in the Rhondda.
My father's family were originally 14 but sadly 4 died very young. Of the remaining ten, eight are still alive. My father now lives in Cardiff, most of the others live around Pontypool, Cwmbran and Newport.
I have a cousin (Steven Strange) in Gloucester and others in Birmingham who are not called Strange but Bills, their mother was my aunt Myra (or Nunna as she was known).
I have all the other names of my dad's aunts and uncles and his brothers and sisters and all my dozens of cousins. If anyone thinks they may be related or if you just want more details please let me know meanwhile here is summary information about my father's family in the Pontypool area:
Caroline Pearce (my great great grandmother)
Her daughter was also called Caroline Pearce (my great grandmother) and she married Charles Strange (my great grandfather) who we believe was born around 1888 in the Pontypool area. They had 12 children:
Glyn - youngest - died in 2002, still lived in Pontypool until then.
Cyril - (deceased) - lived in Pontypool area.
Kenny - (deceased)
Bessie - still living in London, married name Staplehurst
Charlie - (deceased) - lived in Pontypool area
Frances - still living, aged 85, in Pontypool area
Maud (deceased) - married name Moran, moved to Doncaster
Maggie (deceased) - married name Roberts
Harry (deceased) - lived in Pontypool area
Jack - my grandfather - died August 1960 aged 53 years, in Pontypool
Iris - eldest (deceased) - married name was Evans - moved to the Rhondda in South Wales
A twelfth child died age 2.

There is only one Henry Strange with a brother Charles and sister Charlotte who appears in the 1891 census of Wales

Julie confirmed on 17 Nov 2004 that, with the help of her great aunt Frances, these two generations are indeed her family:
Blaendare is the area of Pontypool where my dad's family came from originally. My great aunt confirms that her granddad was a horseman;.she also confirms that her dad's sister Charlotte was older than her dad. She was so pleased that I could trace her dad's family back so far. She said she knew he came from a country family, he loved hunting and the outdoor life. She says he was so skilled as a horse surgeon that he was also able to practice on her father when he nearly lost a finger!

The marriage of Leonard George Strange 24 bach. Banksman at Colliery, residing 17 Glanmore Terrace, Barry (Burry) port Wales, son of Henry and Martha Strange , shepherd of Berkshire, and Martha Jane Hughes, 20 spinster daughter of John Hughes decd. farmer, residing Conduit Inn, Narbeth , Wales, on 22 April 1913, at Bethesda Chapel, Narbeth in Pembroke and Carmarthen Counties, according to rites and ceremony of Baptists. Witnesses George Morris and Maggie Davis.
Son Leonard James Strange b 1915 March qtr, Narbeth, Powys Wales m Evelyne Emily Taylor Sep qtr 1940 Southampton RO vol 2c p 386. Pte Guardsman 24096 Leonard George Strange of 2nd Battn. Grenadier Guards , died in action 1 Dec 1917. His memorial at Cambrai Memorial Louveral Nord France.
His son Marine PO/X101390 Leonard James Strange died 6 oct 1941 in Ismailia Egypt. buried in Ismailia war cemetery.

are all brothers and the oldest sons of Alfred Jarvis Strange and Sarah (Heath). Betty says she is wondering if the parents moved to Wales with their children. (the 5 others are not down as married), The four seem to have been there at least from 1882. We were surprised to see Leonard George Strange working in a Colliery in Wales, I guess there was no farming work in Berkshire, and the young men had to move to other areas for work.
